Alderstead Council's standards arrangements support high standards of conduct by elected members and public confidence in local democratic decision-making.
Conduct and declarations
Councillors are expected to follow the applicable code of conduct and to make the declarations required by the council's standards arrangements. The purpose is to make relevant interests transparent and to provide a clear process when there is a concern about elected-member conduct.
Complaining about a councillor
A standards complaint is different from a complaint about a council service or a disagreement with a council policy. The standards route deals with allegations that a councillor or relevant co-opted member has failed to meet the conduct requirements that apply to them.
A complaint should identify the member, explain the conduct complained about and provide the information needed to understand the allegation. The process distinguishes an allegation from a finding and gives the matter the fair handling required by the council's standards procedure.
Other complaints
If your concern is about a service, delay, administrative decision or the way the council dealt with you, use Complaints. If you want to challenge a political or policy decision, the appropriate democratic, scrutiny or legal route depends on the decision concerned.
